Glass News from Angela, 28th November 2000

Hi,
I hope you had a great weekend, especially those who were celebrating Thanksgiving.
It's good to be writing to you again after a break. If the links didn't work in this email, you'll find them all here: http://www.netnz.com/email/281100news.html

1: Did you know that the Venini Glass company now belongs to Carlsberg Breweries - along with Orrefors and Holmegaard? There's a wonderful new article on the Glass Museum about Venini Glass, written by Ursula Losch, full of superb pictures from the Losch collection. Together with her husband, Ursula who has a magnificent collection of Venini glass, and the article includes photographs of some of their rare pieces. You will find it at http://www.glass.co.nz/Venini.htm

2: The Glass Art Society is celebrating its 30th Anniversary next year, and will be holding its 31st Annual Conference at the Corning Museum of Glass in June 2001. In preparation for this conference, the Glass Art Society has produced glass murrine commemorating the event and they are inviting glass artists to buy these murrine and incorporate them into a piece of artwork for exhibition at the 2001 Conference. You can read about it on their website at http://www.glassart.org/

3: Amongst the new books that have been published recently, there's a new edition of Kovels' Antiques & Collectibles Price List 2000. Click here to take a look. -published November 2000.

4: I have put some superb contemporary New Zealand art glass on ebay this week. Most people seem to like paperweights and perfume bottles, so there are some truly delightful pieces by Peter Raos, Garry Nash, Peter Viesnik, and Keith Mahy. You can see a preview at http://www.antique.co.nz/glass.html and they are all put up without reserve. Some don't even have any bids yet.

5: Keith Mahy is a New Zealand glass artist you may not be familiar with. He was one of the first to build a glass studio in this country, way back in the mid 1970s, and before that he was a designer for Crown Crystal Glass. You can see an article about his work at http://www.glass.co.nz/mahy.htm

6: Our glass on ebay this week includes (click on any one to see the pictures)
- a Peter Viesnik lemon glass perfume bottle
- a Keith Mahy ruby perfume bottle
- Peter Viesnik blue and green paperweight
- blue and gold leaf paperweight by Garry Nash (the last one I have)
- art glass fish necklace by Peter Viesnik
- a small textured candlestick designed by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars Glass
- for those homesick for "God's Own Little Country" - a glass kiwi by Hokitika Glass
- a new color in Peter Raos's underwater "Tidal" paperweights.

I do hope there was something interesting for you this week.

Very best wishes
Angela
